Filter customer list...Last name FIRST

This seems like such a no brainer and basic feature yet it is not available.

I would like to be able to have the option to have my customer list displayed with Last Name first.

For example if I enter customer Joe Smith (displayed in that order) and a month later his wife Betty Smith calls I will likely have two entries because I did not realize that I have the Smith household in my system already, but if I could sort the customers by last name first I would obviously realize this and not have a duplicate entry.  I would imagine this would save space on your servers as well.

  The work around I have found for this is to enter the customers last name in the "Company Name" field as this is what is displayed by default in the customer list. 

  When you leave it blank and enter last name & first name of the customer in the designated fields the program uses this info and moves into the "Company Name" field, but if you enter any info (such as the last name) it will use that info in the customer list by default.

  So I just through my customer list and deleted the first names of my customers in the "Company Name" fields and voila I have a list sorted by last name.  The customers first & last name are still displayed as the  "Contact Name".
